Win_10_Upgrade_Tonight

The decision to upgrade to Windows 10 is either personal or practical.  On a personal level, if your computer is not that old, it makes sense to upgrade to Windows 10 while it's free.  That helps your computer maintain value and longevity.  However, many businesses are still being told by their line of business software vendors not to upgrade to 10 because their software is not yet compatible or fully tested (at the time of this publication).

Should you decide not to upgrade, you will want to disable the offer.  Otherwise it becomes more of an annoying nag and you can risk accidental upgrade that you didn't want or intend.  There are multiple ways to disable it, but here is the method we use:

  1. Disable GWX Service
  2. Uninstall KB3035583 (technically you should also hide it from Windows Update so it doesn't come back)
  3. Registry edits (always backup your registry first):
    1. Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Gwx
    2. Create a new REG_DWORD registry value called: DisableGwx
    3. Give it a value of: 1
